Curebound: Accelerating Cancer Research Through Strategic Funding
Cancer is the leading cause of death in San Diego County, tragically affecting all of us. Curebound, a San Diego-based philanthropic organization, funds groundbreaking research at our region’s world-class institutions to advance prevention and early detection tools, develop new treatment methods, and ultimately find cures. Many of our customers are part of this vital work, and we’re proud to stand alongside them. Through Hoehn Cares, we’ve contributed more than $250,000 to support Curebound’s mission. By bringing together the brightest minds in science, Curebound is accelerating the path to a cure.
Curebound’s Key Research Partners and Collaborators
Curebound awards grants to researchers at the following institutions, with many studies carried out in collaboration across teams. In addition, Curebound’s Catalyst Grant supports San Diego-based early-stage biotech companies conducting cancer research.
UC San Diego Health
Curebound invests in UC San Diego Health’s world-class physicians and researchers. It is one of the most active health science research institutes nationwide, conducting several hundred clinical research studies per year. Some of their recent studies being conducted with Curebound’s support include using AI to spot genetic weakness in tumors to help doctors determine a treatment path without waiting for costly genetic testing, boosting immunotherapy for head and neck cancer patients, increasing equitable access to cancer prevention and detection, and improving access to lung cancer and colorectal cancer screenings.

Salk Institute
The Salk Institute is a world-class research center that consistently pushes the boundaries of innovation. Through Curebound’s Discovery Grant, scientists at Salk’s National Cancer Institute-designated Cancer Center are making breakthroughs in understanding genetic mutations that drive the spread of neuroblastoma tumors, developing methods to slow the growth of pancreatic cancer, and uncovering patternss in how triple-negative breast cancer spreads.
Sanford-Burnham Prebys
Sanford Burnham Prebys is a leading nonprofit biomedical research institute. Its Cancer Center is one of only seven official basic research cancer centers designated by the National Cancer Institute, bringing together cross-disciplinary specialists, including cell immunologists, cell biologists, epigeneticists, metabolic scientists, and gerontologists. Curebound grants are supporting their research to develop cancer drugs that block a protein enabling mutated cancer cells to survive.

La Jolla Institute for Immunology
The La Jolla Institute for Immunology is dedicated to understanding the intricacies and power of the immune system and applying that knowledge to health and disease prevention. Curebound grants are supporting its research efforts to develop new approaches for treating breast, lung, head, neck, and other cancers. Notable studies include research into recruiting virus-fighting immune cells to kill tumor cells, investigating T-cell behavior, and improving overall immune system responses.

Scripps Research
Founded more than 100 years ago, Scripps Research is a pioneering nonprofit advancing precision medicine to target genetic mutations and biomarkers unique to certain cancers. Scripps scientists, in collaboration with the Salk Institute, were awarded a Discovery Grant by Curebound to identify new treatment options for cancer-associated cachexia, a condition in which cancer causes severe weight and muscle loss.
Rady Children’s Hospital
Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego is the largest children’s hospital on the West Coast. In addition to providing comprehensive care for its patients, its affiliation with the UC San Diego School of Medicine and other research institutions connects children with the latest treatments and relevant clinical trials. Curebound funding supports COMPRENDO, a program focused on increasing underrepresented clinical trial participation among Hispanic children through culturally tailored peer navigation. Another key initiative supported by Curebound aims to preserve fertility outcomes in adolescent cancer patients.
Curebound has plans for numerous fundraising events, including the Curebound 10K, a 5K Walk, high-energy spin classes, and the Concert For Cures, which partners with legendary artists to host large-scale concerts in Petco Park.
